Photo Essay - Northumberland County

Most of the club hikes take place in Northumberland County. The countryside is very much like rural England with its rolling hills and farms but there is a subtle difference. While hiking in the county you see the history of pioneer Ontario in the heritage cemeteries, abandoned railways, the old farms with their stone walled fences and the small townships. The county was settled by United Empire Loyalists with the Crown providing plots of land with the stipulation that the settlers make the land productive. Cobourg was the commercial centre and a landing point for European immigrants. Hikers see and appreciate this history and see the beauty of countryside that changes with each season. Mike Hick.
